Instagram carousel splitter

Drop in a wide image and get back slides that line up when someone swipes. Equal strips first, cropped inside each strip — which is what keeps the seams where you put them.

Posting it

  1. Download all the slides. They are numbered in order.
  2. In Instagram, select multiple and add them in that order — slide 1 first.
  3. Do not let Instagram re-crop. If it offers to fit or fill, the slides are already the right shape and any further crop moves the seam.

A carousel can hold up to 10 images, which is Instagram's limit rather than ours.

Questions

How many slides should a panorama be cut into?+

However many keeps each slide close to square without stretching anything. The tool suggests a count from your image's proportions when you drop it in, and Instagram allows between 2 and 10.

Why do the seams sometimes not line up?+

Because Instagram crops what you upload. If each slide is not already the exact shape Instagram renders, it trims the edges and the seam shifts. This cuts equal strips first and crops inside each strip, so the boundary between slides never moves.

Square or 4:5?+

4:5 takes more vertical space in the feed, which is why most accounts use it. Square is safer if the image is shallow — a wide panorama cut into 4:5 slides loses a lot of width to the crop.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?+

No. The cutting happens in your browser with a canvas element. The file never leaves your device and we never see it.
